Mixed Metaphor

Journal Lesson

Create a figurative piece inspired by Maxfield Parrish, using collage, graphite, and charcoal.

We are going to create a figurative piece inspired by this month’s master artist Maxfield Parrish. While discovering his work I became fascinated with the way he created a juxtaposition of mediums in some of his illustrative work contrasting delicate graphite against bold graphic elements. From this inspiration we will be working in a similar way with collage, graphite, charcoal and some wet media.

  • Watercolor paper, I used Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed 300 gsm
  • Graphite Pencils - a few within the range of grades from 4H to 8B
  • Kneaded Eraser
  • Mono Tombow Zero Eraser 2.3mm
  • Craft knife and Sandpaper for sharpening pencils
  • 2 Patterned papers for collage e.g. stripes, dots, script
  • Tracing paper
  • 4B Graphite Stick I used Cretacolor (optional as a pencil may also be used)
  • Ballpoint pen
  • Small scissors
  • Black water soluble pencil, I used a Derwent Intense in Charcoal Grey and a black Faber Castell Albrechct Dȕrer Water color pencil
  • Black Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pen, medium tip(or any similar artist pen)
  • Matte Medium + small brush for adhering collage paper
  • Gouache – in a color that coordinates with your collage paper + black.  I used Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache in Sap Green, Ivory Black and White. This may be substituted for other wet media of your choice e.g. Fluid or Hi-flow acrylics, watercolor. Results may vary but explore and experiment!
  • Vine or Willow Charcoal tissue for blending
  • Charcoal Pencil, I used a General’s 2B (med)
