Realm of the Fae

Journal Lesson

Learn the art of simplification and evoke emotion with color in our fairy-themed painting class, focusing on value and expressive brush strokes.

I’ve had a love for mythology and folk tales ever since I was a little girl. Especially the fairies were very intriguing to me. There are so many different kinds and a lot of them could be very mischievous. I loved all the different ways they would tease and educate the clueless people around them. My favourite book of all time has to be “Faeries”, beautifully illustrated by Brian Froud. If you’re into the little folk, I think you will enjoy this book very much.

Today I would like to teach you two things:

  • The art of simplification
  • Evoking emotion through expressive use of colour

I want to show you that there are other ways to setting a scene than focussing too much on reality and which place of better suitable than the realm of the Fae? We will keep our brush strokes loose and sloppy and leave out as much details as we can get away with. Value will be the star in our painting. When we have our lights and darks in the right place, we can do with our colours what we want and it will look good. Also, we’re going to simplify our colour palette to really amplify the emotion in the scene we’re setting.

  • Mixed media or watercolour paper
  • Gesso
  • Acrylic paint - I used phthalo blue, black, titanium - and mixing white, cadmium red light, yellow ochre and unbleached titanium, but I encourage you to work with the colours you have on hand. Unless you’re a fellow art supply hoarder ;)
