Reflected

Explore women's untold stories through expressive mixed media portraits and poetry.

We all come from a long line of ancestors. Women over the years have been the backbone, the strength and the glue to their families and communities. In this course, we will reflect on these women and capture the essence of their stories through a series of expressive portrait projects. The projects are not of specific women, but the ones that history did not record. We will witness their stories of resilience, strength, vulnerability, joys, pains, and love. Their stories reflect back to us what is most valuable in life.

We will find a connection to these women-- their strengths and vulnerabilities while building expressive portrait skills and using mixed media techniques. We warm up creating our own collage papers and background pages. The first two projects focus on finding expression and story. In the more in-depth portrait lesson, I'll share placement of facial features using a limited palette, texture and layers, and how to compose the piece with two figures. In the bonus lesson, we capture the story of these women through a short poem.
