The Beauty Around Us

Journal Lesson

Discover the joy of modern needlework, blending tradition with contemporary style in our embroidery class.

I have had a love for needlework since I was about 13 years old.  I did my first cross stitch project in a home education class in Jr. High, I’ve been hooked ever since.  I come from a long line of women that dove into the art of needlework.  From my maternal great grandmother crocheting doilies and my paternal grandmother creating hand embroidered pillowcases, I’ve had this beautiful art in front of me one way or another for many years.

I have recently discovered how fun it is to change up the traditional embroidery designs with a more modern look.  Fabric and thread choices are limitless, finished pieces can easily be framed or displayed right in the hoop.

I also love how convenient working with embroidery is.  With only a few small supplies needed, embroidery can really be done anywhere.  I enjoy taking it with me while I wait for my daughters at their dance class.  I also find it so relaxing to cozy up on the couch and slowly work away at my piece.  Its something I can do with my hands while my mind can wander.  I think it’s the perfect project for this month’s theme “Finding Beauty in Everyday Life”.

The supplies needed for embroidery is minimal. All you really need is some thread, a needle, a piece of cloth and scissors. Of course, there are a few other supplies that make this are more convenient and fun.

Fabric- I used a cotton that is dark and has some glitter to it. Sheer and stretchy fabric can be very difficult to work on.

Thread (also known as floss) - I use DMC brand, found at most craft supply stores. I basically used three shades of blue, glow in the dark white and a small amount of a sparkly blue. The colors are organized by numbers rather than names:
